Where three first-party agents (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) bet on model lock-in or their own model, Cline bets the exact opposite — 30+ provider BYOK + 100% Apache 2.0 OSS + a user-approval gate. It bets on third-party freedom in place of first-party integration depth.
Its axis of differentiation isn't layer depth, or surface distribution, or an application-layer model — it's independence from the model layer itself. This is the deepest position BYOK can occupy.

This is ground the four first-party agents fundamentally cannot reach. Claude Code and Codex run only their own models; Cursor went as far as 4 BYOK providers plus two of its own models, but that's not 30 providers. For swapping models freely per task, Cline stands alone — DeepSeek-Coder to cut costs → Opus 4.7 for a big refactor → local Qwen for sensitive code → Gemini for multi-modal.
Cline's own Provider offering has also settled into BYOK-optional pay-as-you-go ($0.01–0.10/task), cutting the key-management burden while preserving BYOK freedom.

The cause is closer to a third-party agent not being model-specific-optimized. Plan/Act mode + the approval gate register as overhead on benchmarks — autonomous agents that run to the finish without user approval score well on benchmarks. The design philosophy is tuned to operation over benchmarks.
4. No first-party polish — UX is functional
The thread the coding-agents category overview captured as "the UX is closer to functional." Against Cursor's visual IDE polish, Claude Code's plugin-marketplace depth, and Codex's multi-surface consistency, Cline is function first, polish later.
It's the nature of OSS — contribution velocity is very high, but consistency, design, and docs aren't at first-party level. A strength for power users, but the ground of the daily editor a senior reaches for every day went to Cursor and Claude Code.
5. Market share is by stars — not by usage share
61.2k GitHub stars are a signal, but in JetBrains AI Pulse Jan 2026 — Copilot 29% / Cursor 18% / Claude Code 18% — Cline is explicitly absent. The enterprise-adoption standard is held by the four first-party agents, and Cline shows up only among power users and OSS-friendly users.
Enterprise adoption cases like Cursor at 64% of the Fortune 500 (review), Codex at 100% of Cisco's new code (review), and Anthropic dogfooding Claude Code internally (review) are empty for Cline. Official certifications, SOC, SSO, audit logs are ground the first-party agents took.
Use Cases — When to Reach for Cline
1. Model freedom first (30+ provider BYOK) — workflows that swap o3 for debugging, DeepSeek for cost, Qwen for local, Opus for big refactors, Gemini for multi-modal per task. Ground the four first-party agents can't reach.
2. Transparency / approval gate as the first gate — explicit approval on every code change. Plan/Act mode is the first default for production changes, security-sensitive work, and hard-to-undo operations.
3. Strong air-gapped / on-prem / data-residency requirements — with local Ollama and LM Studio, data never leaves your machine. The exact opposite of the first-party agents' being bound to the Anthropic and OpenAI APIs.
4. Multi-editor operation — environments where a whole team uses VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, Zed, and Neovim. The same Cline works in all of them.

Synergies with Other Agents

Cline + OpenRouter — multi-model routing from one key

Cline + Cursor (extension in IDE)
